You were hoping for the new Lexus GX to be impressive. And let me tell you, it truly is impressive.

Toyota trucks have always been known for their impressive off-road capabilities and long-lasting durability. It's no wonder why so many people are drawn to them. Recently, the Lexus GX, which used to be a niche luxury model based on the small Land Cruiser, the Prado, has gained popularity and is now on par with the larger Land Cruisers, 4Runners, Tacomas, and other tough Toyotas.

Toyota has recently excelled in providing enthusiasts with exactly what they desire. When Lexus introduced a rugged off-roader with Land Cruiser roots and optional 33-inch tires, it caused quite a stir.

This is the GX550 Overtrail edition, the most specialized off-road trim in the lineup. (There's also an Overtrail+ version with added luxuries). Just like all GX models, the Overtrail comes with full-time four-wheel drive featuring a low-range gearbox and a locking center differential, but it also includes a rear locker. It's equipped with Toyota's innovative Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system, which enhances traction on various surfaces. Additionally, it features Crawl Control, a type of off-road cruise control, and E-KDSS, which can disconnect the sway bars for improved suspension articulation. Standard features include a range of cameras for monitoring the trail surface, 33-inch Toyo mud-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, and skid plates.

The GX may not have the highest approach, breakover, and departure angles at 26, 24, and 22 degrees, but it still impressively tackles ever challenge. Even though a Land Rover Defender with air suspension may have better angles, the GX proved its capability by conquering everything.

Activate the MTS system, traction becomes a breeze. Just give the computers a moment to analyze the situation, and within a couple of seconds, they'll take charge and employ different techniques to get the truck in motion. You'll sense the system skillfully applying brakes, adjusting engine torque, and performing maneuvers to smoothly propel you forward.

The GX no longer has the charming old V-8 engine; instead, it now boasts a new 3.4-liter twin-turbo V-6. The new engine pairs seamlessly with the GX's 10-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain is finely tuned for off-road adventures, giving the driver precise control over the torque distribution to the wheels.

This SUV strikes the perfect balance between modern and traditional. With features like MTS, E-KDSS, and Crawl Control, even someone new to off-roading like me can easily navigate challenging terrains. However, it's important to remember that these systems only enhance the inherent power of this rugged SUV with its sturdy ladder-chassis and large tires.

The GX550 is truly a remarkable vehicle, showcasing both power and durability. However, what sets it apart is its refined nature. While it may transmit some minor road-surface imperfections at lower speeds, as is typical for a body-on-frame vehicle, it exudes luxury in every other situation.

The adaptive dampers in both Comfort and Normal mode provide a luxurious ride, while the powerful V-6 engine's torque and smoothness make you completely forget about the previous Toyota V-8. However, having ten forward gears might be excessive, as it can sometimes cause delays when downshifting. Unfortunately, the fuel economy is not impressive, and it's challenging to achieve more than 20 mpg. (A hybrid version will be available soon).

The GX impressively maintains a quiet atmosphere despite its shape and size, and it even manages to minimize the noise produced by the mud-terrain tires. As anticipated from a Lexus, the interior materials and build quality are superb. Although I find Toyota's new digital gauge cluster to be overly complex, the infotainment system is the complete opposite. What sets it apart is the low beltline, offering excellent visibility and a comfortable spot to rest your arm when the windows are down. It's a rarity in today's cars.

Perhaps the most convincing reason to reconsider the GX is the upcoming Land Cruiser. With a starting price of $57,345 / Qar 208793 compared to the GX's $64,250 / Qar 233934, it also boasts a hybrid drivetrain. However, the mid-grade Land Cruiser is priced at $63,345 / Qar 230639 and shares many similarities with the base GX in terms of features. It's worth noting that Toyota currently doesn't have a counterpart to Lexus's Overtrail trim.

The GX550 Overtrail is not only great, but it's also one of the most comprehensive vehicles available in the market right now. It perfectly meets our expectations.
